Analogue Film Wedding Photography
35mm film wedding photographer in Cardiff, South Wales, UK & Destinations
Film photography offers the ability to have your wedding day captured on a tangible, organic material. Recording the light that makes up the atmosphere of your celebration directly onto celluloid film, coated with light sensitive silver halide crystals providing photographs with natural grain, texture, and non-clinical, more authentic imagery.
A perfect counter balance to the modern digital world, film photography has a nostalgic, retro appeal that involves a more emotive intentional approach to shooting a wedding. The soft, romantic aesthetic requires more patience, but possess a timeless, elegant feel.
Experienced Analogue Film Photographer
I am thrilled to see the resurgence of analogue film in recent years, not only in photography but many features films have been using the medium combined with vintage cinematic lenses for an earthy, textured look.
As a full time professional photographer since the late 1990’s a good portion of my career has been spent primarily using film. I started by building a make shift darkroom in the attic, before my first job where I hand-rolled film canisters in the hull of a ship cruising around the Caribbean.
Then during my time as a newspaper photographer, I would kneel alongside muddy rugby fields in the South Wales valleys, hand processing film in a portable duo tank before trying to find a kindly borrowed telephone line to wire the images to the picture desk. One image could take up to thirty minutes, no digital sensors, no wifi and no bluetooth!
Wedding Film Photography: Soft, Romantic Aesthetic
Film photography can be especially powerful for weddings but it is not about it being “better,” it is about what kind of feel you want. Since the early days of digital imagery, there has been a desire to re-create the analogue film photography ‘look’. It is quite possible to edit an image captured on a digital camera with post production software so it ‘looks’ like film. But then the point of analogue film photographs, is that it is a chemical reaction that posses imperfections that are impossible to replicate. There is also something beautiful in the knowledge that theres is a unique and tangible physical negative behind each image. Something real to archive, to hold and treasure.
Film Photography Considerations
Delivery Time – film processing, scanning and editing will take weeks to deliver, so no option for no early previews.
Cost – film and developing is relatively expensive.
Low-light situations – a roll of film has a fixed sensitivity level, even with high iso film, as the light fades the use of artificial flash will be required more so than with digital cameras.
Thinking About Having Film Photography at Your Wedding?
I offer the option to adding analogue film photography to my normal digitally captured wedding coverage. This is charged per roll, simply select the number of rolls you would like during the booking process.
Alternatively for the analogue film purists I am also happy to photograph your whole wedding day on film, with the use of multiple cameras to ensure results.
The films will be scanned, edited and images provided via online gallery, the physical negatives are also yours to keep.

“Sacha was fantastic! I was very specific in wanting to capture the narrative of the day and that I wanted atmosphere over posed photographs.”
“I have a background in Fine Art and Sacha was the only wedding photographer I liked, so I was very happy that he was able to do our wedding. He even ran into the sea with us for some quirky shots in the wind and rain! He never complained despite getting soaked and the photos captured such a beautiful vibe of the day. I would highly recommend him.”
Laura & Thomas
“He was so discreet but captured some wonderful moments throughout the day.”
“Sacha was great in the lead up the wedding; listening and understanding what we wanted from the day as well as working with us to accommodate the different locations of the bridal party and ensuring photos were taken in all. On the day you hardly knew Sacha was there but the photos showed he was everywhere!! We are so happy and proud of the photos.”
