St Donat’s Castle Wedding Photography
A More Natural Approach to Wedding Photography
Here are some examples of my St Donat’s Castle wedding photography that I have captured for previous bride and grooms within my role as a South Wales wedding photographer. Few venues in the UK offer such a powerful combination of medieval grandeur, coastal beauty, and rich cultural history. For couples looking for a setting that feels both romantic and cinematic, St Donat’s Castle is truly exceptional.
“Thanks so much! We love them.”
St Donat’s Castle Wedding Photography
Situated in the Vale of Glamorgan along the South Wales coastline, St Donat’s Castle dates principally from the 12th century. For the greater part of its history, the estate was owned by the Stradling family, whose stewardship shaped much of the castle’s early development and preservation.
In 1925, having seen images of the property published in Country Life magazine, the American newspaper proprietor William Randolph Hearst acquired the castle. Hearst often cited as the inspiration for the central figure in Citizen Kane invested substantial resources into its restoration. His extensive renovations modernised the estate, introducing electricity not only to the castle itself but also to the surrounding locality, thereby benefiting the wider community.
During Hearst’s ownership, St Donat’s Castle became a noted gathering place for prominent cultural and political figures. Among its distinguished visitors were Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks, a young John F. Kennedy, and the playwright George Bernard Shaw, who famously observed; “This is what God would have built if he had had the money.”
Today, the castle is home to Atlantic College, founded in 1962 as the first of the United World Colleges. Its continued role as an international educational institution adds a contemporary dimension to its long and distinguished history.
From a photographic perspective, St Donat’s Castle provides an outstanding range of settings within a single estate. The architectural character of the castle its stone façades, archways, courtyards, and historic interiors creates a refined and timeless aesthetic well suited to elegant wedding imagery.
The surrounding gardens and lawns offer formal and informal spaces for group portraits, while the castle’s elevated coastal position affords sweeping views across the Bristol Channel. In favourable conditions, the quality of light at sunset enhances the texture of the stonework and landscape, producing images of notable depth and atmosphere.
The interiors, whether used for ceremonies or receptions, convey a sense of occasion and heritage. Their scale and character lend themselves to photographs that balance grandeur with intimacy, ensuring that the narrative of the day is preserved with authenticity and refinement.
St Donat’s Castle combines historical significance, architectural distinction, and natural beauty in a manner few venues can equal. Its heritage, coupled with its dramatic coastal setting, provides an environment that is both impressive and evocative.
For couples seeking a wedding venue in South Wales that offers privacy, distinction, and visual richness, St Donat’s Castle represents an exceptional choice. It is always a privilege to document weddings at this remarkable estate and to create images that reflect both the significance of the setting and the individuality of each couple’s celebration.

“Sacha was fantastic! I was very specific in wanting to capture the narrative of the day and that I wanted atmosphere over posed photographs.”
“I have a background in Fine Art and Sacha was the only wedding photographer I liked, so I was very happy that he was able to do our wedding. He even ran into the sea with us for some quirky shots in the wind and rain! He never complained despite getting soaked and the photos captured such a beautiful vibe of the day. I would highly recommend him.”
