Mid Week Wedding at Cardiff City Hall & Cardiff Castle – Ezgi & David

Mid Week Wedding at Cardiff City Hall & Cardiff Castle – Ezgi & David

On the 10th July 2019 I photographed a mid week wedding at Cardiff City Hall and Cardiff Castle. The bride and groom was Ezgi and David, they held their marriage ceremony at Cardiff registry offices, whom are based within the City Hall. Ezgi’s immediate family had travelled over from her home country of Turkey to share the day with them. Though they also have plans for a big celebration with her extended family back home. David’s family are from South Wales, so with them and a few close friends it was to be a relative small family mid week wedding. As this was the case they asked if I would be happy to just spend a few hours with them. To document the wedding ceremony at the City Hall, a few family groups in the Alexandra Gardens. Then we made our way to Cardiff Castle for a couple of more photographs before the family settled down to a celebratory meal in the tower rooms.

“We just wanted to drop you a quick email and say a massive thank you for your photography on our wedding day.”

“We absolutely appreciated your patience – nothing seemed to be too much trouble and you were so approachable and professional, particularly when trying to position us while we were having a chat!”

Christmas Wedding at Cardiff Castle – Caroline & Dean

Christmas Wedding at Cardiff Castle – Caroline & Dean

Caroline and Dean held their Christmas wedding at Cardiff Castle, South Wales on 9th December 2017. The bride and her maids were making use of the Castle Tower apartments, in preparation for the wedding. Dean and his groomsmen were meanwhile across the road in a hotel before they made their way to the Banqueting Hall in the Castle for the marriage ceremony. After which, drinks were served for the guests in the sumptuous decorated library area. This was half day photographic coverage which I accept mid week and winter months. So one of the last photographs I captured was as the happy couple made the night walk across the castle grounds to the modern interpretation centre which was to host the wedding breakfast.

Cardiff Castle Wedding – Dawn & John

Cardiff Castle Wedding – Dawn & John

Saturday 22nd July 2017 I photographed the wedding of Dawn and John at Cardiff Castle in South Wales. Dawn is originally from Cardiff, but they currently live in John’s hometown near Chicago in the USA. A few close friends and family memebers had also made the journey across the Atlantic to join them on their wedding day in South Wales. I started the coverage on the day in the tower rooms of the castle, where Dawn was preparing fro the big day. The marriage ceremony was in the undercroft of the castle, which is in direct contrast to the elaborately decorated banqueting hall where the wedding breakfast was served later on in the day. Before that though the drinsk reception took place in the grounds of the castle, amongst the hustle of visiting tourists. In the evening guests returned to the undercroft for the couple’s first dance and further celebrations.

“Thank you so much for the photos, we all love them! “

Wedding at Cardiff Castle – Jennifer & James

Wedding at Cardiff Castle – Jennifer & James

Jennifer and James were married on Saturday 27th August 2016 at Cardiff Castle in South Wales. I met up with the couple at the Park Plaza hotel were they were separately preparing for the big day. Once the men were dressed I walked through the city centre with them to the castle, where the marriage ceremony was performed in the undercroft. Drinks followed in the castle grounds and once the public visitors had left for the day, the wedding party adjourned to the library. The wedding breakfast was hosted in the castle’s grand banqueting hall, where a dinner was attended by President Obama and other world leaders during the Nato summit in Wales a couple of years ago. Following the after dinner speeches, guests retuned to the undercroft for the couples first dance and evening entertainment. Jennifer and James currently live in Australia, after I posted their wedding photographs to their antipodean address I was pleased to receive to message below.

“We couldn’t be happier with the professional quality of the photos – you’ve managed to capture some really special moments from our day. It is wonderful to be able to relive  the happy memories! “

Cardiff Castle is one of Wales’ leading tourist attractions and a site of international significance, located within beautiful parklands at the heart of the capital. It started its life as a Roman fort,  established around 50 AD, on a strategic site that afforded easy access to the sea. After the Norman conquest, the Castle’s keep was built, re-using the site of the Roman fort. The first keep on the motte, erected by Robert Fitzhamon, Norman Lord of Gloucester, was probably built of wood. Further medieval fortifications and dwellings followed over the years. The Castle passed through the hands of many noble families until in 1766, it passed by marriage to the Bute family. The 2nd Marquess of Bute was responsible for turning Cardiff into the world’s greatest coal exporting port. The Castle and Bute fortune passed to his son John, the 3rd Marquess of Bute, who by the 1860s was reputed to be the richest man in the world. From 1866 the 3rd Marquess employed the genius architect William Burges to transform the Castle lodgings. Within gothic towers he created lavish and opulent interiors, rich with murals, stained glass, marble, gilding and elaborate wood carvings. Each room has its own special theme, including Mediterranean gardens and Italian and Arabian decoration. The 3rd Marquess died when he was only 53 in 1900. Despite huge death duties on the estate, the 4th Marquess completed many of his father’s restoration projects including the reconstruction of the Roman wall. The Bute family continued to stay at the Castle throughout the 1920s and 1930s, although they had sold off many of their business interests in south Wales. Following the death of the 4th Marquess of Bute, the family decided to give the Castle and much of its parkland to the city of Cardiff.

Cardiff Castle & Park Plaza Wedding – Lee & Julian

Cardiff Castle & Park Plaza Wedding – Lee & Julian

On Friday 1st May I documented the same sex wedding of Lee and Julian. I met up with both of them in the morning at the Park Plaza Hotel in Cardiff, where they were putting on the final touches, fixing ties and cufflinks before taking a stroll, through the city centre to Cardiff Castle.

“We are extremely pleased, and wanted to thank you very much for these great memories.  They certainly bring the day right back!”

The marriage ceremony was to be performed in the guest tower at the castle, where some of their friends had already arrived to the join the pair for a glass or two of champagne before the nuptials were exchanged in the Walnut Room. After more drinks in the tower and few family group shots on the castle lawn, we all made our way back to the Park Plaza for the wedding breakfast and the speeches that followed.

Cardiff Castle Wedding, South Wales – Sonalle & Adam

Cardiff Castle Wedding, South Wales – Sonalle & Adam

On the 4th October 2014, I photographed the Hindu marriage ceremony at Sonalle and Adams’ Cardiff Castle wedding. They asked me to provide just a few hours of photographic coverage to capture the traditions and rituals of the blessing and a few group shots in the castle grounds.

Cardiff Castle is a combination of medieval and Victorian Gothic revival architecture and does always provide a challenge for a photographer. Firstly because the undercroft where the ceremony took place has no natural light and the electric lights are set to a dim hue to preserve the atmosphere. Whilst you could use a camera flash, I find this strobe of artificial light quite distracting and is some cases disrespectful, so I prefer to use top quality cameras and the best lenses available which enable me to photograph using just the ambient light, maintaining an unobtrusive approach. Secondly the castle is a very popular tourist destination so you do have to be creative so to avoid getting any unwanted visitors in the background and still utilise the location to its potential.

You can see more of my wedding photography at Cardiff Castle here.
